This scenario, long confined to science fiction, has a name: the technological singularity. A concept first sketched in the 1950s by mathematicians, popularized by a Google futurist, and feared by luminaries including Stephen Hawking himself, it now sits at the heart of the most serious debates in the global scientific community. But what does this notion really mean? Is it a prediction built on solid ground, or a techno-millennial prophecy dressed up in numbers? Let’s break it down.

So What, Exactly, Is the Technological Singularity?


An Idea Born in the 1950s


Before it became a prophecy or a fear, the technological singularity was an intellectual concept and a far older one than most people realize. Mathematician John von Neumann is generally credited with first sketching the idea in the 1950s, when he spoke of a point of rupture in technological progress beyond which the rules governing the world would no longer hold.

A Simple Definition of Singularity in the Context of AI


Put as simply as possible: the technological singularity is the moment when an AI becomes capable of improving itself autonomously — without human intervention — and does so exponentially. In doing so, it crosses a threshold beyond which it surpasses collective human intelligence in every domain: science, art, strategy, philosophy, creativity. At that point, progress would no longer be the work of humans, but of the machines themselves.


In other words, it is the moment when the “narrow AI” we know today — specialized, limited, dependent on us — gives way to a fully autonomous Artificial Superintelligence (ASI).

His prediction rests on the “law of accelerating returns,” which he states as follows: “An analysis of the history of technology shows that technological change is exponential, contrary to the common-sense ‘intuitive linear’ view. So we won’t experience one hundred years of progress in the twenty-first century, it will be more like twenty thousand years of progress.”*



What Kurzweil Actually Predicts


The futurist doesn’t stop at a date. He maps the path to the singularity in precise stages. According to him, by 2029, AGI (Artificial General Intelligence) will be a reality: an AI capable of performing any human cognitive task. And by the 2030s, “AI will no longer be something external that we interact with through a screen, but something we connect to directly, integrating it into our brains through an immersive experience.”*



By 2045, the vision is total merger: man and machine would form a single entity. He even goes so far as to suggest the possibility of digital immortality, through copies of our consciousness being uploaded to the cloud. A dizzying scenario, at the frontier of transhumanism.

The Skeptics Have Solid Arguments Too


Yann LeCun and the Wall of Consciousness


Yann LeCun, former Chief AI Scientist at Meta and 2018 Turing Award winner, is one of the most respected figures in the field. His position is clear and unambiguous: the singularity as Kurzweil describes it will never happen. For LeCun, it will never be possible to emulate or replicate human intelligence in all its complexity, because AI cannot possess true consciousness, intuition, or genuine creativity.*



This is not a fringe position. Philosopher John Searle, cognitive psychologist Steven Pinker, and Jeff Hawkins (founder of Numenta) share similar doubts: human intelligence is too deeply rooted in the body, in biological evolution, and in social context to be fully captured and reproduced in a machine.


Moore’s Law Is Running Out of Steam


One of the core pillars of Kurzweil’s thesis (the exponential growth of computing power) is itself under scrutiny. Moore’s Law, which underpins the very idea of the Singularity, has been showing signs of strain. It has been driven largely by the steady miniaturization of electronic components that has continued for seventy years. But silicon-based technologies will soon reach the physical limits imposed by the size of atoms themselves — a boundary beyond which further miniaturization becomes impossible.


In 2006, physicist Theodore Modis wrote that Kurzweil and the singularitarians “tend to neglect rigorous scientific practices such as focusing on natural laws, giving precise definitions, checking data meticulously, and estimating uncertainties. It would nevertheless be misleading to ignore the fact that the explosion of generative AI since 2022 has seriously shifted the conversation. Models like GPT-4, Gemini, and Claude have achieved performances that many scientists would have deemed impossible just a few years ago. “Generative AI in the 2020s challenges the assumptions of the most committed skeptics and further validates Kurzweil’s predictions,” the Wikipedia page on the subject notes with careful restraint.*

What If the Singularity Actually Happened? What Would That World Look Like?


The Optimistic Scenario: Augmented Humanity


In Kurzweil’s vision, the singularity is not an apocalypse — it’s an apotheosis. An AI that surpasses humans isn’t necessarily a hostile AI. It could solve the problems we have never been able to crack: cancer, climate change, aging, famine. By 2045, he envisions the dawn of the Singularity as a moment when the boundary between man and machine dissolves, and humans could enhance their memory, intelligence, and lifespan — approaching something close to immortality.


Kurzweil has sought to reassure audiences. In a widely-noted interview at the SXSW podcast, he stated: “Machines give us more power. They make us smarter. They may not be inside our bodies yet, but by 2030, we will connect our neocortex — the part of the brain responsible for thinking — to the cloud.”*



The Pessimistic Scenario: Loss of Control


Stephen Hawking held a radically different view. The British physicist believed that machines with superintelligence could pose a threat to human existence. One can reasonably suppose that a superintelligence developing itself autonomously and exponentially might, at some point, come to view humans as an obstacle — or simply stop caring about their fate. This is what specialists in the field call the alignment problem. Masayoshi Son, CEO of SoftBank, also anticipates superintelligence emerging by around 2047.


Beyond the killer robots of science fiction, the real risk identified by researchers like Nick Bostrom (Oxford) is more subtle: a superintelligent AI optimizing a seemingly harmless goal in so radical a fashion that it becomes dangerous for humanity. This is the famous “paperclip problem” in the AI alignment literature.


The Inequality Question: A Two-Tier Post-Human World


Even in an optimistic scenario, the technological singularity raises an urgent social question. Those who can afford longevity treatments and cognitive implants will form a new elite of post-humans, leaving behind a biological majority. Humanity could fracture into radically unequal castes — no longer rich and poor, but augmented and “left behind.”


This dimension surfaces in discussions about AI’s impact on the job market — a topic that is already very tangible today and would become truly dizzying in a post-singularity world.


AGI: The First Step Toward the Singularity — Where Do We Actually Stand?


Before reaching the singularity, we must first pass through AGI: artificial general intelligence — the kind that can do everything. This is where debates are currently most heated. Kurzweil predicts AGI by 2029. Many startup and AI company CEOs share that timeline. Some experts, however, are more measured, and others are openly skeptical.


What is certain is that current language models like ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, and DeepSeek have accomplished in just a few years things that nobody had anticipated at this pace. We are not yet at the AGI stage. But some signals give — depending on which camp you’re in — reason for either hope or concern about the emergence of such an AI.

The truth likely lies in the discomfort of that uncertainty.

And the questions it raises about our identity, our relationship to work, our freedoms, and even our survival can no longer be relegated to the margins of science fiction.
