OpenAI unveils ChatGPT Atlas, a web browser completely redesigned around artificial intelligence. More than just a browsing tool, Atlas integrates ChatGPT into the heart of the Internet browsing experience. It is an assistant capable of understanding the context of web pages, automating tasks, and acting directly on the web, while giving users full control over their data.

In short
ChatGPT Atlas is OpenAI's new browser, built entirely around its conversational AI.
It allows ChatGPT to accompany you everywhere on the web, without leaving the page you are viewing.
The browser incorporates smart memories and an agent mode, capable of performing online actions for you.
Privacy remains at the heart of the system, with total control over what ChatGPT can see or retain, according to OpenAI.
Atlas is now available on macOS, with Windows, iOS, and Android versions coming soon.
A browser reinvented around AI
On October 21, 2025, OpenAI introduced ChatGPT Atlas, a web browser that integrates its flagship conversational agent, ChatGPT, directly into the center of this “next-generation” browser. The goal is clear: to rethink the way we use the web through artificial intelligence.
Until now, ChatGPT has already been used to search for information online. Atlas goes further: AI becomes a true integrated assistant, capable of understanding the context of your pages and interacting with them without you having to copy and paste or switch tabs. But that's not all...
A seamless and contextual experience with ChatGPT Atlas
OpenAI's ChatGPT, a browser that helps you directly from your browser
Atlas allows ChatGPT to follow you everywhere on your digital journey. Whether you're preparing a presentation, writing a report, or planning a trip, the AI automatically understands what you're doing and can intervene according to the context you're in.
For example, if you're reading an article on a technical subject, ChatGPT can summarize, explain, or expand on the information without leaving the page. How? Through a side window that allows you to interact with the AI, similar to what Copilot offers with the Edge browser.
Enriched and personalized results as soon as you open a tab
The Atlas home page and the websites you visit thus become real spaces for interaction. You can enter a question or URL and instantly get comprehensive results such as text, images, videos, and news.
Personalized AI, under your control
Integrated but optional memory
ChatGPT Atlas introduces a major innovation: browsing memories. ChatGPT can retain information from the websites you visit to help you later. For example, you can ask it to find the job offers you viewed last week, or to find the websites you saw when researching your honeymoon. This may remind you of Windows Recall, a feature announced by Windows on Copilot+ PCs that was controversial because it could automatically and continuously capture our activity, raising doubts and concerns.
However, these memories are entirely optional according to OpenAI. You can disable, archive, or delete them at any time from the settings. In addition, if you clear your browsing history, all associated memories will be deleted.
Enhanced privacy and control
OpenAI also emphasizes transparency and data control. You can decide at any time whether ChatGPT can see the content of a website via a simple switch in the address bar. By default, the pages you visit are not used to train OpenAI models, unless you choose to enable this option. Even in this case, sites that have blocked GPTBot are never used.
Tools suitable for all audiences
Atlas also inherits the parental controls already present in ChatGPT, with the option to disable browsing history or agent mode for younger users.
Agent mode: when ChatGPT acts (almost) on your behalf on the Internet
With agent mode, Atlas takes a step toward automation. ChatGPT can now perform concrete actions on websites. Imagine you're planning a dinner party: you can ask ChatGPT to find a recipe, locate a nearby store, and add the ingredients to your shopping cart.
At work, it can analyze team documents, compile competitive research, and write a summary. This mode is available in preview for Plus, Pro, and Business users. Rest assured, however: the AI will always ask for your confirmation before interacting with sensitive pages or performing delicate actions such as making a purchase after filling your online shopping cart. In addition, it cannot download files, install extensions, or execute code.
Safety and limits: towards controlled risk?
The arrival of such a browser on the market naturally raises questions, particularly around the protection of personal data, but not only that. By allowing ChatGPT Atlas to access certain information, AI can learn to understand our browsing habits, interact directly with the pages we visit, and access even more precise data about our online behavior.
Despite the guarantees put forward by OpenAI in terms of confidentiality and security, it is legitimate to ask: can such a browser really be risk-free? And how will OpenAI, as well as other players who will follow in this market, ensure the effective protection of our data?
Availability and next steps
ChatGPT Atlas is available today on macOS for Free, Plus, Pro, and Go users. A beta version is available for businesses (Business, Enterprise, and Education). OpenAI plans to release Windows, iOS, and Android versions soon, as well as future features such as:
Multi-profile support to separate browsing contexts;
Better tools for developers;
And new ways to make ChatGPT apps more visible in Atlas.
